Lotus Turbo Esprit Fact Respository for the 1981-1987 Lotus Turbo Esprit (the Giugiaro cars.)

Custom Lotus parts, guides and facts for the Lotus Turbo Esprit. 2.2 Liter Lotus engine with turbo. Guides for tires, wheels, engine, transmission as well as custom carbon fiber, aluminum and fiberglass parts for the Lotus Turbo Esprit. As well as an adjustable suspension for the front of the car.

Facts for both the US and UK Lotus Turbo Esprit, including spring rates, engine info, parts, modifications, specifications (specs), pictures, users, owners and vital information for the Lotus.

Some information might be valid for non turbo cars and other Esprits as well, some custom parts may be usable on non turbo version of the car and other parts may work on the later Esprits. And suspension adjustment and springs, coilovers coil overs and other stuff.

Turbo Esprits have the 2.2 liter lotus engine and 210 horsepower, we have custom fiberglass, aluminum and carbon fiber parts being developed along with a multitude of facts on the lotus cars.

We will have replacement OEM parts as well as custom unique parts for the esprits made from fiberglass, carbon fiber and aluminum.

We are interested in hearing from other lotus owners including S1 owners, S2 esprit owners and S3 n/a lotuses. We have a variety of owners.

CNC Milled Aluminum Interior***

July-2005 UPDATE: Aluminum shift knob is on hold for now. The alloy shift boot surround will be made as a one-off project. The front speaker adapter rings will also be a one-off project. They will be designed to be able to install decent 4" speakers into the original speaker grills. Mounting is faciltiated by having the rings threaded like the original outer lock rings (ACME). Larger, upgraded speakers are mounted to the adapter ring. We can arrange to have copies made for those interested.

Redesigned Front and Rear Suspension***


We have a new upper and lower control arm assemblies, upper frame adapter and fully adjustable coilover springs that will allow the front of the pre-85 Esprits to gain an adjustable height.

Control Arm Design elements include:

  • Chrome moly construction,
  • Adjustable spherical inner bushings (so you will no longer have to fight with the oem rubber ones),
  • Front camber adjustment,
  • Spherical balljoint anti-roll bar mounting is used that will accurately locate the suspension and allow free suspension movement without binding,
  • Lower inner mounting stiffeners.
  • 2.6 lbs lighter than OE, each side

Coil-over shock features:

  • 12 point fully adjustable rebound, (double adjustable now available)
  • Valvable compression,
  • Fully rebuildable,
  • Spring rates available from 180 to 400lb/in,
  • Custom fabricated Lotus Esprit top mount adapters for front and rear.
  • 2.4 lbs lighter than OE, each side

The shocks, top mounts and matching spring sets for front and rear could be made available for those interested.

Front Suspension Kit


We have new upper and lower rear links that will allow full adjustment of the rear of the pre-87 Esprits. Longer links would be available for the newer cars.

Rear Link Design features include:

  • 6061 alloy construction,
  • Adjustable teflon lined spherical inner and outer bushings (so you will no longer have to deal with oem),
  • left-hand,right-hand rod ends so that simply undoing the jam nuts and rotating the link will adjust length instantly, no removal of parts.
  • Inner and outer bushing adapters to fit the OE attachment points,
  • Spherical link mounting is used to accurately locate the suspension and allow free suspension movement without binding,
  • 2.9 lbs lighter than OE, each side

Each link is complete with rod ends and adapters.

Front Brake Upgrade Kit***

We have developed a front brake upgrade kit. Features include:

  • A 298mm by 22mm vented rotor on a custom fabricate 6061 alloy bell
  • Four piston "superlight" caliper with optimized caliper piston areas delivering up to 16% more effective brake torque.
  • 6061 Caliper mounting adapter that fits OE mountings
  • 13 different brake pad compounds to fine tune brake bias and heat range.
  • Will fit inside the OE 15 inch wheel.
  • Bolt-on kit - no special fabrication is required.
  • Stainless steel braided brake lines
  • 2.6 lbs lighter than OE, each side.

August 2005 UPDATE: Final assembly complete; alloy parts ready to go out for anodizing.

Gauge Binnacle

Probably not a kit, put potentially detailed instructions. If there is enough interest I might make a kit. I am going to experiment with updating the binnacle with something looking more like the V8 gauge cluster utilizing the stock gauges. This would probably be a brushed aluminum gauge plate and a fiberglass binnacle that would need to be appointed in leather matching your interior. This is a longer term project that I probably won't even work on until the Winter '04/'05.

Composite Body Panels and Trim***

There is the potential for getting molds made of body pieces such as the rear louvers and lower valance. Additionally if there is enough interest we may be interested in producing modified body pieces such as the rear hatch with and without louvers and a lower valance with cutouts for dual exhaust exits. These body pieces may be made of Carbon Fiber, Kevlar, Fiberglass or a combination thereof, depending on interest.

  • Rear Body Undertray, mold complete, Kevlar reinforced CF parts available.

  • Re-engineered center console assy, ready for upholstery.
  • Rear Louvers, mold 80% complete
  • 2-element rear diffuser, project 60% complete
  • 3-fan shroud, mold 80% complete
  • Engine cover, mold 10% complete

Short Throw Shifter Conversion***

We will be designing a "set" of pieces to replace the OEM linkage assembly to shorten and tighten up the shift linkage on the S3 Esprit. It will likely involve slightly modified bellcranks, sealed bearings and spherical ball-joint links.

Adjustable rear upper links

I have been making adjustable length upper rear links for both the inboard brake and outboard brake rear Esprit suspension. This allows full camber adjustment for the rear wheels. They use the factory rubber bushings and can be ordered with the bushings pre-installed or you can supply your own. I have sold some direct but they can be ordered through (http://JAEParts.com)
