Installing a Blow Off Valve

Why a Blow Off Valve

Although Turbocharging wasn't “new” when Lotus added a turbo to the Esprit, it certainly wasn't commonplace. Lotus' implementation leaves some things to be improved, one of which is the use of a dump valve instead of a blow off valve.

Studs and bolts

Exhaust studs are the same as the exhaust studs for the 1990-1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse/Eagle Talon. If you want OEM style studs you can get a stainless stud kit with 9 studs for about $110 (the Lotus engine requires 12 studs though.) OEM mitsubishi studs cost around $1 each (and add in the cost of the crush nut for $0.50 for a total of $18 for the whole thing.)

Peformance Cookbook

There's a lot more to performance than just making more horsepower, and there is a lot more to making more horsepower than just “turning up” the boost. Remember that the Lotus shines at handling, if you want straight line speed there are better cars to be modifying (and they are cheaper to modify too.) That said, getting a little more kick in the pants is part of the reason we own these cars.

How a Turbocharger Works

Turbochargers harness some of an engine's wasted energy to compress the air going into that engine - thereby increasing the output of the engine. Perhaps you can sense something cyclic about the previous sentence. That's because a turbocharger is by its very nature, cyclic. Use of a turbocharger can increase the output of an engine by 30 percent or more without a significant increase in the weight of the vehicle.
