Ignition & door keys
The ignition and door lock keys are an oddity (not Toyota blanks as with later cars.) The key blank is actually for most British Leyland from 81-96, including the Rover 3500 (the same car the tail lights came from.) The following is a list of brands and part numbers for various key blanks:
| Manufacturer | Part Number |
| Ilco | LF17,AA3 or X50 |
| Dominion | LF17 |
| Taylor | X157 |
| Curtis | AA3 |
| Silca | LF10 |
You can purchase the blank at
Triple-C and get it cut locally (although most locksmiths will have the proper blank.)
Replacing missing/broken keys
If we break/lose a key is there a way to get a replacement based on the VIN?
Gas Cap Keys
Most British Key Shops will easily be able to recreate the ignition key and the glove box key, but the gas cap key will typically throw them for a loop.
After looking for months, I ran accross a place in Texas could do the job:
Steve's Lock Shoppe - 63A Summer Place - Huntsville, TX 77340
Steve Sandlin - vwcarlocks@hotmail.com
He was able to source the keys from England and then cut them from the stamped code on the side of the key. I never even had to send him a key. He did it all from a photo.
One other thing about the gas cap keys. Over time, the mechanism in the gas cap can become tough to rotate, putting a tremendous strain on the key. In my case, the plastic handles on the keys split up the center, allowing the metal shaft to fall out. Steve's keys are 100% metal, so there's no weak plastic handle to worry about.
